Digital Showcase Success

This is our final trailer that premiered at the digital showcase, my role in the showcase was to show potential students what they would be accomplishing during their secound year and show them some previous work from the first year, I also talked to parents of potential students and showed them a little bit around the work we had done, the programmes we used and explained to them how our trailer was made. Overall I would say the digital showcase was a success with many people signing up to join in september

This is a banner produced, this has a lot of our work from year 1 and 2 on it, credit to Benedict Torkington for making the actual banner

Digital Showcase

All of our hardwork is being brought together at a digital showcase, to show off our work and show future shipley college students what capable with the right ammount of effort and dedication, our finalized game trailer will be posted on our blogs the day after it premiers at our digital showcase. See this post in the near future

Evaluation!

Its time to evaluate! Our game trailer has been finalised after a lot of hard work from our development team, Exodus, this trailer was created from scratch by a small group of 4.

I personally think our trailer has come out how we’d hoped, we researched a lot of things to start with such as target audience, previous similar games/trailers, art styles such as rococo for the environment and character styles such as cyber punk, our target audience was generally aimed at 18 and over core gamers, and generally male.

The first scene in our trailer is basically meant to be a standard local pub, with a few people drinking in it, Adam started out by creating this bar, the idea we had was our main character was in the bar, he’d get knocked eventually and wake up to the same bar with a little twist, this bar would now have been destroyed and still currently on fire, this bar scene was also created by Adam. The animations in these scenes were done by James since he is our head animator we left it to his imagination and personally I think it was done well.

The sounds for the first scene was done by me, I had to create sounds using sound sequencers (Reason) and also collect some sounds from sound libraries and edit them using programs like audacity, I also edited the sounds for the final part of our trailer, which I helped draw but left the texturing to Dan, he developed some of his textures in Photoshop and also used some texture libraries for our rococo themed buildings.

All of our 3D work was done by hand, none of it was downloaded or done by following a tutorial, we drew all of our concept art and pretty much developed everything from scratch.

However, I do agree that our trailer could be better, like with everything in life there is always room for improvement. We could of achieved a better outcome (even though I am happy with our outcome at the moment) if we organized ourselves more we would have had more time to develop more detailed work and maybe an extra scene, our main downside was our organization skills, although not terrible, not great either. Also our sound editing could have been done all from scratch if we’d have organized our time better, however with us being a bit strapped for deadlines we had to use more sound libraries than we had hoped.

One of our main problems developing this trailer was our character design, none of us have really explored character modelling before so it was a new area to discover, we had many problems with trying to animate our character by using bones, we wasn’t able to get a smooth animation going so we’ve had to stand our character down in a still position. This is something our team would have tried to change if we’d of had more time or better organization skills.

Comments I have had from showing people my trailer, would be things such as “scary but well done” and along them general lines, which is what we wanted to do. We wanted a scary trailer that would leave people wanting more, a game that can actually give people emotion such as fear is always considered good in my opinion.

Overall our team is happy with our trailer, we have worked hard and created an outcome which is satisfying to the time we spent creating it. It’s weird to watch your own trailer for the first time, and it’s a good feeling that we’ve actually managed to create something using industry standard programs.

Drawings

Since this course is also about creativity we have taken some time out from research to do something a little bit more relaxing, this is the result. I enjoyed this part of our course because I myself want to be a concept artist.

Unit 71,
Recently I have been working on Unit 71 for Mark. In this unit I have included a sound storyboard for sounds that we may need to record produce or sample from other sound libaries. I have done 2 of this because of 2 different possible story plots. Pictures below, click to enlarge

I have also done an essay about the history of sound to try boost my grade up, i shall be posting this at a later date when I have finished it.
Unit 4,
Last week team meeting 4 took place and we discussed the name of our game would be "Pulse". Now we have started production on a game logo and case for Pulse.
During my own production I have added more to my unit 4 powerpoint, reviewed and critically analyised 5 "offensive games". The reason behind this was to make sure that we didn't offend anyone during our production work, such as religion and race.
Another subject we have covered since I last updated my blog is plot. We have written a basic plot so we know what we are working towards, this also helps so we know what sounds we need to produce for unit 71 (Mark Towers). Here is the plot, click to view in a new window.

Company Logos
Another task we have been working on is thinking of a company name, we all did individual names and individual logos then voted on the name we would use. The name we voted on during a team meeting was "Exodus". Here are a few examples of our logos, the one I personally did and the one we ended up voting for.

Production Diary the First

Unit 4,
Unit 4 for me personally is up to date with research we have been working as a team looking at different art deco styles. Such as Rococo and CyberPunk. We have also researched into what a "live brief" is and been given our own live brief to work of.

We have also been researching different influences for our trailer, we did this in a group discussion and wrote it all down in a storyboard format.

Other work,
So far I personally have done some concept art for the character that another team member is working on drawing in 3DSMax. I have started working on some environment modeling in 3DSMax. So far I have started working on a bar, which has 2 floors and 2 serving points and a flight of stairs, I need to add seating areas next and then I should hopefully be working on texturing.

The plot of this trailer is on its way but still isn't finished, the plot will be posted at a later date once it has been decided on since each member of our team is writing a similar but unique plot.

Sound research has been finished and now all thats needed is actual sound production, sound production clips will be posted at a later date.
